A portion of Ragged Point’s Black Swift Falls trail. At 400 feet, Black Swift Falls is the tallest waterfall on the Big Sur coast.

Nothing will get your blood flowing and your heart pumping like a stimulating hike and there are a number of good ones along the North Coast.  You can combine a hike this with some sightseeing and a bit of wine tasting along the way.

What do you eat, Jeanne?

Although I eat healthy and am thin, my diet might not be the right one for you.  The way I eat won’t necessarily be the answer to a healthy body composition for you.  There are too many things to consider, before copying my diet.  Besides the fact that my cholesterol is about 120 mg/dl, my blood pressure hovers around 90/60 mm/Hg, and my body fat is about 17.4%, I have celiac disease (CD).  This column will explain what CD is and how it relates to me.  It was written not only to teach you about another aspect of health, but also to share with you my pursuit of a healthy lifestyle.

Take aim and let fly: Archery on the Central Coast

There’s something inherently romantic about archery. Perhaps it’s the simplicity, the fact that a stick and some string can send an arrow flying clear across a field. Or maybe it’s the bridge archery creates between modern men and women and our ancient ancestors, people whose lives depended on their ability to shoot accurately. For Riley Royce Smith, a local marksman and archery instructor, the most enjoyable aspect is the Zen-like peace he gets from the repetitive act of mastering a craft.

Never Going Back to 480

At age 20, Andrew Frudden is a fit, handsome young man with striking brown eyes, clear complexion and rosy pink cheeks that accompany his overall health and his enthusiasm for his new life.

Today, no one would look at Andrew and imagine that just three years ago he was a 480 pound teenager with diminishing hopes of a full life, disabled not only by his burdening weight, but by the overwhelming fear that he might not live to see 20.

Paddling the Ocean Blue: Sea Kayaking on the Central Coast

We floated through the ocean swell dipping our paddles gracefully as we glided by the coastline of Santa Barbara County. Our destination on our sea kayaking tour was El Capitan Beach where we would disembark, take our camping gear out of the kayak’s cargo hold, and spend the night at the campground. So far we had covered about six miles and the paddling was easy and uneventful. Suddenly something broke through the surface of the water on either side of our little band of kayakers. “Dolphins,” somebody cried. Sure enough a pod of Pacific dolphins were joining us on our journey.

Where to swim on the Central Coast

Swimming provides a fantastic, full-body workout that’s actually fun. There’s something inherently playful about the water, even when adults use it for serious exercise. Unfortunately, swimming season only lasts so long. As soon as summer ends, the demand for refreshing swims in the hot sun comes to an end, and a plethora of pools close down for the fall, winter, and even spring. But what can you do if you want a low impact workout in the water in the off months? Here’s the skinny on where you can dip during the rest of the year:

Onion Tart with Market Greens, Roasted Beets, Candied Fennel Seed Pecans, and Basil Vinaigrette

by Kelly Wangard, Executive Chef at Summerwood Winery & Inn, Paso Robles, CA
Shopping for produce at farmer’s markets is valuable in more way than one. Besides the obvious of getting the freshest produce in season, it is most flavorful because it is picked at the peak of ripeness. Produce that must travel long distances to meet a market will be picked ‘green’ and therefore the flavor and texture will be jeopardized. It is essential for your body to get a variety of different fruit and vegetables and that could be exactly why we have seasons.
