SLO Op Climbing brings high adventure films & activities to area

SLO Op Climbing

Full week of films and activities through Oct. 7 celebrates the great outdoors.

Last year’s benefit screening of Banff Film Festival’s Radical Reels tour in San Luis Obispo was such a success for SLO Op Climbing that they decided to expand one night of films to a full week of films and activities celebrating people in the outdoors from Sept. 30 to Oct. 7.

A joint venture between All Out Events and SLO Op Climbing, both run by Kristin and Yishai Horowitz, the event comes at a time when people start to wrap up their summer adventures and start thinking about winter.

“It’s a perfect time to get people excited for what’s out there,” said Kristin, “and we’re excited to engage locals and visitors alike doing what we do best – getting them out on adventures.”

The week’s activities include a slideshow at the climbing gym by world famous surf photographer and SLO local Chris Burkard, an all-abilities public bouldering competition at SLO Op Climbing, an Access Fund Adopt-a-Crag clean up at Bishop Peak, and two more nights of film screenings.

“We’ve been trying to bring the full film festival here, but no luck yet,” said Kristin. “This is a selection of the more high adventure films that come out of the internationally famous film festival in Canada.”

Sunday night features a double header: Reveal the Path – the story of an endurance mountain biker and friends traveling the world on bike and Gold Rush Mother Lode 2012, a look into the 4-day adventure race that All Out Events helps to produce. Monday evening closes out the week with the Reel Rock Tour – selections of the best climbing films produced in 2013, also featuring a raffle for participants.

“SLO Op Climbing has a duty as a non-profit to benefit the local climbing community,” said Kristin, “and thanks to the supporters of our club, we have the opportunity to reach out to our fellow adventurers by bringing these activities to the Central Coast this fall.”

The event benefits SLO OP Climbing, and aims to become an annual event.
