The CrossFit Games

The search for the Fittest on the Planet

The purpose of any workout is to “increase your fitness”, yet only one workout program has actually defined “fitness”.  In CrossFit, fitness is “increased work capacity over broad times and modal domains”.  This sounds complicated but its actually very simple.  It basically means that you have the ability to do any task, for a variety of different times and at different weights.  Not that you are the best at the tasks, but that you are physically prepared to do anything, whether its life, career, or sport related.

Becoming the All-Terrain Human

Kilian Jornet Burgada is the most dominating endurance athlete of his generation. In just eight years, Jornet has won more than 80 races, claimed some 16 titles and set at least a dozen speed records, many of them in distances that would require the rest of us to purchase an airplane ticket. He has run across entire landmasses (Corsica) and mountain ranges (the Pyrenees), nearly without pause. He regularly runs all day eating only wild berries and drinking only from streams. On summer mornings he will set off from his apartment door at the foot of Mont Blanc and run nearly two and a half vertical miles up to Europe’s roof — over cracked glaciers, past Gore-Tex’d climbers, into the thin air at 15,781 feet — and back home again in less than seven hours, a trip that mountaineers can spend days to complete.

The Joy of Flying

You are dangling 25 feet in the air. Far below you is nothing but the hard warehouse floor. Holding you up is nothing but a sleek, slippery fabric which increasingly threatens to slide right out of grip with each passing moment.

Luffa Love: locally-grown luffas and herbs provide natural relief

Is it a sponge? Is it a plant? Just exactly what is a luffa and what are the benefits of using one? A visit to The Luffa Farm in Nipomo for a tour is just the thing you need to do to learn all about it.

“They’re sponges, right?” That’s the question most people ask when they come to the farm. And the answer is no, they are not sponges like the ones that live in the ocean. A luffa is a plant. Proprietor Deanne Coon and her family have been growing luffas for more than 20 years.

History of the Marathon in San Luis Obispo

When the 2012 SLO Marathon + Half debuted on April 22, it had been exactly 26 years since the last marathon in San Luis Obispo history. Always the perfect place for a long run, the marathon event in San Luis Obispo had been only a memory since 1986.

My tough mudder story

Editors note: Gary Brown of Paso Robles completed his first tough mudder in September. This is his story.

Misery never felt so good

Why am I here? What’s my age again? 42? Is that old? I was at a friends house for an after golf tournament dinner party. I was happily consuming whatever I wanted: beer, pizza, wine, cheeseburgers, you name it. I overheard a couple of guys talking about the “Tough Mudder Race”.
